Can You Crack It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention Which Forged our Contemporary Globe

One can find numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.

As per a new book, though, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”

Owing to this rapid automated saw, which converted timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct vessels faster than anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.

The First True Industrial Device
