Catherine's Traditional Festive Carol Concert Honours Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Centred Around Kindness and Compassion
The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Gradual Return
The princess has been making her own gradual return to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Music and Opportunity
Those coming to the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the organisation, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.
Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for food banks.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
