India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of the city showed an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the safe level established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

For the past four years, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that engulfs the capital as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless in recent months, the current local administration approached the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels seen during celebrations in at least three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in the city is caused by a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air descends.

Medical and Financial Toll

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple research.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand early deaths annually in the capital.
