Man City Three-Nil Manchester United: Hemp finds the net in City dominant win.
Similar to Storm Claudia hit the north-west the prior day, the home side swept Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.
Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United
This outcome represented successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes severely dented.
The Red Devils' capability to manage domestic and European soccer with a limited team has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they seemed weary throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.
Tactical Shifts
Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.
City, in opposition, have no similar loading concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.
Commanding Opening Period
The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic offense played with and tore United open with a superb opening period display that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.
This left the home team completely dominant and saw the visitors disorganized. Prior to this encounter, United had allowed just six in this league campaign but they fell apart in the wake of the hosts' attacking flair.
Initial Opportunities
The omens came soon when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, using the gap left by Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.
The Red Devils had a number of attacks forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, probing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.
Scoring Spree
They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the far post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th header of the campaign.
They extended their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to drive through the midfield from the back, the field widened for City. The prominent Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before providing a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick shift in possession saw Hemp afforded the room to strike a shot home from range.
Second Half
The clearest change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on goal.
The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their advantage when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to defeat any opponent who placed above them last season, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
