Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
